The Playas Basin, located in Hidalgo and Grant counties, covers approximately 925 mi² and is bordered by the Continental Divide and Animas mountains in the west. The Continental Divide, Pyramid mountains, and Coyote Hills border the basin in the north. The Dog, Alamo Hueco, Big and Little Hatchet moutains border the basin in the east. The coincidence of the international boundary and division of drainages due to subsurface geologic formations creates the southern boundary. The Upper Playas which is higher in elevation and has more precipitaion drains and recharges the Lower Playas as does percolation through tributary recharge of the South Playas Draw "complex".
