The Animas basin aquifer system is 6340 km² (2448 mi²) of Chihuahuan highlands. The Animas basin is made up of 4 sub-basins, the Lordsburg, Upper Animas, Lower Animas, and Cloverdale basins. The aquifer's boundaries are comprised of the Continental Divide (east), the Peloncillo mountains (west), Burro mountains (north), and the Sierra San Luis (south). The aquifer is recharged in the higher elevation upper basins where more precipitation occurs, which inturn sustains the broader, more arid lower Animas sub-basins.
