The Hachita-Moscos Basin is a closed and partially drained system which has an area of about 2,700 km˛ (1040mi˛). It lies within the Mexican Highland section of the Basin and Range physiographic province. There are three subbasins that make up the Hachita-Moscos Basin: Upper Hachita, Wamel-Moscos and Lower Hachita. The basin is separated from the Mimbres and Playas basins by the bordering mountain ranges except in the Hatchet Gap area. Surface run-off from highland areas is carried by ephemeral axial streams to Laguna los Moscos. Annual recharge to the Hachita-Moscos is estimated to be about 4,800 ac-ft.
